made about thirty years ago. The left lens is -9 and
lens thickness is 12 millimeters. The difference in
thickness with the weaker right lens is reduced
somewhat by fitting the left lens sticking out both
in front and behind the 5 millimeter frame.
In the 1970's and 1980's, girls and women were
commenting on their thick lenses as well, but by then
contact lenses had become widely available. For the
first time, wearing glasses could be regarded as an
option instead of a verdict. Especially in Amsterdam,
many moderate myopic girls and women chose to
wear big, striking glasses and lens thickness was
accepted by many as a price to be paid for beauty
