These late 1960's Lozza glasses were a candidate
for many of my previous photo shoots but they
did not suit the faces of the models very well.
They simply had to wait patiently until Marleen
appeared on the scene. A fine match indeed and
a lovely portrait!

Marleen has a strong astygmatism and as a result,
I could only find three pairs of glasses reasonably
near her own prescription. Definitely not enough
for a proper photo shoot, but there was another way
to try out more glasses. The trick is to find glasses
without cylinders, in which one lens gives the eye the
minimal spherical Rx, without the additional cylinder
strength. The other lens gives the eye the maximal
spherical Rx: spherical plus cylinder strength in all
directions. Each eye on its own sees a blur, but the
brain combines the images of both eyes into a fairly
clear view. I did some of these experiments with
previous models who had a moderate astymatism.
The trick worked quite well for some models, but it
did not work at all for some other models. For Marleen
I selected a dozen glasses and miraculously, six of
these gave her a fairly good view whereas the other
six glasses were useless to her. An interesting puzzle
to be solved after the photo shoot....

charity shop in Wicklow, Ireland, the morning after
a great night performing for the itinerant community.
The travelers were very generous with the pints so
I nicknamed my find the "hangover glasses"....
