The earliest solution to accomodate extreme
myopes is called "Kreislenti" in German. In my
childhood days in Amsterdam, men and women
could be seen in the streets, wearing myodiscs
like these. For viewers unfamiliar with myodiscs,
these lenses were used when normal lenses were
impossible to wear because of their extreme
thickness at the rims. There were no contact
lenses, let alone laser surgery, and high index
lenses were not invented until perhaps the 1980's.
A myodisc lens consists of a plano or positive
carrier lens, surrounding a "bowl" containing the
prescription required
